In its own words, this book is not a diagnosis book, nor is it a book that will guide you on specific treatments. What this book will do is give you the tools, found through trial and error on behalf of the author’s part, to live in the “happy Mid-Polar Zone”. We are given questions up front to help us determine if we could be suffering from Bi Polar Illness. The author narrated his own experiences and struggles with Bipolar illness and how his struggle has led him to discover how to function and be happy in his everyday life. This might sound simple, but for someone who suffers from a mental illness, it is huge!The book is written very thoughtful and caring. The author really has a familiarity with the topic that shines throughout this book. I did not feel as though he continued the negative association you see or hear in our society every time a mental illness is brought up. Rather, he is consistently upbeat and positive while staying on message and also keeping a realistic view.

BIPOLAR WELLNESS: How to Recover from Bipolar Illness: An Entertaining Memoir with Simple Action Strategies for Every Stage of Recovery by Michael Rose is a great book to help anyone understand more about bipolar illness. From his own life story, the author tells us of his first episode, and how he was hospitalized and barely made it out alive. From there, he went on to research and learn more about the disease, and hence this wonderful book that lays out a program for wellness. With a focus on nutrition, the author says that food can indeed improve one's health and even became a licensed nutrition counselor. With cohesive sections like: The Body-Mind Connection, Recover- An Inside Job, Connecting the Dots with Support Networks, Bringing Your Recovery Into the World- Becoming Proactive, and Bipolar Basics: Information Supplements, the author has covered a lot of ground, yet manages to do it in a positive and inspirational manner. This positive mindset goes a long way to creating wellness, that along with solid recovery action worksheets and assessments make this book a must read for anyone affected by bipolar illness, whether themselves, or someone they know. Highly recommend.

Michael Rose speaks from his own personal experiences that started with his first episode and culminated with his acceptance and ability to turn this illness into a wellness program. The strategies and methods are good for anyone who is affected by this illness. This is a good view from someone who has been through the experience and the different stages of this process. Wonderful book. Practical, useful for anyone dealing with acute mental illness. Unfortunately, my son won't read it because, as he says, "I don't have Bipolar Disorder. I have Schizoaffective Disorder. Now, please buy me some beers, because my meds aren't working "
