This book is full of insights and things you didn't know you wanted to know about the job of a judge. Ret. Judge Small succinctly shares his best advice about being a judge - everything from practical pointers to cold realities and how and why it's important to either keep going - or instead resign from the bench. Some topics he could have devoted (and maybe later will?) entire books in themselves, but he keeps moving to give a full perspective for those looking up to or down from the court's position of power in our lives. A recommended read for all judges and want-to-be judges, for law students and probably anyone who's been involved with the legal system for any reason!
Very helpful in understanding a judge's many roles and duties. Judges and non-judges will enjoy this book.
The author, Chip Small, oversaw one the most outrageous miscarriages of justice in state history with the Wenatchee "sex ring" cases. He admitted a supposed "confession" by the husband of a woman on trial - he saw no problem with letting a prosecutor (now herself an awful judge) read it from a police report into the record and so many more unbelievable examples of sheer incompetence - and that is the tip of the iceberg. Think again before suggesting anyone take tips from Chip or waste their time with this "slim volume." He is a nice enough guy I'm sure and looks like a judge from central casting, but he was anything but a good judge and was not only a terrible judge from a technical, fundamental first-year law student knowledge base, but also from the humanity he threw to the wolves while the defense bar did nothing. The town he was a judge in suffered from a defense bar that collected money and did nothing on many cases, a corrupt cop, and power hungry prosecutor. The horrible consequences of Judge Small's rulings were finally remedied by the Innocence Project Northwest and years later, the innocent were freed. Don't waste your money on his book, read the Seattle Post Intelligencer Series "Innocence Found" by Andrew Schneider to see what he really did on the bench.
