About the Author

In writing The Human Side of Agile, Gil Broza has tapped into fundamental concerns -- and challenges -- of Agile practitioners. For not only does the "human" in the book's title refer to the people that make up any Agile team, it also pertains to those who lead them, to those who run the company, and to the people who purchase and use the end product. Gil encourages the reader to take up servant leadership and to steer all involved toward the excellence promised by mindfully executed Agile. Since 2004, Gil has trained and coached more than 6,000 professionals who then delighted their customers, shipped working software on time, and rediscovered passion for their work. Agile has a dirty secret..Many Coaches will teach you how to do Agile, how to follow the rule and change your process (for the better). Many times you will hear that Agile is NOT a silver bullet, it is a Silver Mirror..However it can take time.. Sometimes a long time for the true impacts of agile to manifest in your teams. The realization that they have to embrace being agile and its tenets at their core. This change can cause distributions and tensions as people try to Grasp the change that is happening.I would list this book as a MUST READ for anyone undergoing agile adoption especially at the end of year one.

There are many books about agile leadership. This is the one to start with as it covers all of the key areas and also points you to many of the canonical resources for the role of people in agile. To be successful at agile you need to understand the process you are using and the technical skills. There are few guides that cover the "meta" level where real people struggle with adopting agile methods. This may well become the standard companion book to the process and technical books on agile to address that level. You'll still want to read others to dive more deeply into specific areas, but this book can be your guide.

This book helped us take our agile implementation to the next level.I've seen many teams implement the agile practices and then get stuck, not making much more progress on the journey toward being agile. One of the frequent comments about agile is that it doesn't *cause* problems with your development efforts, but it will *expose* problems. But what then? This book answers both of those problems. After you've implemented the practices, the next step is to make progress on the human side with those problems that are exposed.

If you've read Seth Godin's "Linchpin", and your chosen field of "becoming the best in the world in" is leading Agile teams, this book gives you all the details on how to become the Agile Linchpin in your environment. It's full of practical advice, presented in a way that can be read cover-to-cover, but also organized such that you can quickly find answers to questions you ask yourself in your day-to-day work. You'll learn about designing your role, growing an Agile team, engaging in powerful conversations, being an Agile leader, and sustaining your team for the long term. You'll find plenty of extra food for thought if you follow the links in the notes section, and you can download handy one- and two-page worksheets and resources from the book's companion website.Gil's book is the most practical "how-to" for Agile leaders and Agile change agents that I've found so far.

Gil really nails this one on the head! I think another reviewer said, "stop doing Agile and start being Agile" and I couldn't agree more. This book is designed to be on your desk, dog-eared, tape flagged, and well loved. I have read it cover to cover, but find myself going back to it and reading a chapter (or a part of a chapter) at a time, and that's more what Gil intended. I happened to be asked to read the manuscript and am so happy for Gil with the finished product. After it was published, I ordered a copy for another ScrumMaster who works with me and is struggling with getting her team from moving from "storming" to "norming". Highly recommend.

Gil Broza teaches us not only how to be a great manager or leader, in fact, he guides us in every possible angle of agile methodology. He undertakes a myriad of pragmatic actions in a real life workplace. The book opened my mind as a result of gathering more responsibilities as an Agile Team Leader (ATL), as he names perfectly. Furthermore, it covers a fully understanding of building a strong team and keeping them productive and motivated. For these reasons, I would recommend it to any person accountable for delivering awesome products in a sustainable environment and pleasant.

C.S. Lewis once remarked "We read to know we are not alone". This is a fantastic book that captures much of the known wisdom of how to succeed with Agile and provides additional fresh insights. As a practicing Agile Coach, I'll keep this book in my hotel room, next to the other great books often found there, and look to it for help when facing tough (human) challenges on my projects.

This book was a great read. While it covers a lot of typical patterns, I imagine it would be hard to not relate to fair chunks of the book. I have already started encouraging others to pick it up and give it a read.
