So many times, a book is either too scholarly requiring a background in the field, or too elemental and not enough depth. The taoist classics translated by Thomas Cleary assist in understanding the wisdom and a jumping off place for personal application. It gives a perspective, knowing that often there is no English equivalent to the Chinese and often, the original manuscript refers to other eastern teachings and can have multiple levels of meaning and understanding. I appreciate that the author/translator allows for this, giving those of us with a language barrier a glimpse of the truths in these ancient works.
This along with Alfred Huang's book of the I Ching are very important and helpful. Qigong is part of my daily life and this book is part of the work. This is a beneficial book to add to your library if you are working with Eastern philosophy, Qigong, and classical Chinese medicine.

I can't say enough good about the work of Thomas Cleary. He clarifies Zen in a way that is succinct and poetic and useful. Good for Thomas Cleary.
I have not gotten all the way into all that it has to offer. Saving it until I process Volumes 1, 2 and 3. These are the best. The knowledge is by far so great. Volume two and three are with me as I have tea every morning. It helps me in my life greatly. Thomas Cleary did a great job in his life and in sharing the knowledge with humanity.
