Volume 3 of Snyder and Capullo's Batman has received many accolades from fans and critics, and it is well deserving. However, when I finished with Death of the Family, I felt a little let down. Admittedly, I read this story roughly a year after it came out in issue form, and so had a rough knowledge of what the premise was and how highly it was received, thus also had a little bit higher than normal set of expectations. Snyder and Capullo certainly delivered, but didn't seem to hit it quite on the mark. The writing was emotional, concise, fluid and fast-paced. The art is terrific, but sometimes felt a little cartoony. While still excellent and doubtlessly captures the feel of Batman and Gotham, it doesn't seem to have the same depth and expression as the art in Justice League or Reis' Aquaman. However, Capullo deserves praise for his work, which outstrips several other New 52 titles. He truly captured the twisted relationship between Batman and his antithesis.I guess where I find the biggest fault in this work is with the Joker. He just felt off to me. The story does mention (through the narrative of Harley Quinn) that this is not the same Joker we had before. This psychopath is shamelessly murderous and gruesome (due in part to his mangled visage). I don't mind the massacres and savagery; it was drawn without succumbing to the 'gore-porn' of other comics. But in this case, I felt a little queasy. The Joker has been well known for his gruesome attacks, but there has usually been the slight counter balance of humorous observations or facial expressions. In this case, there was just utter cruelty and madness. Snyder tried to insert jokes and humor, but it just did not work. I'm not looking for Batman to be facing Mr. Sunshine Joker, but this revolting clown just didn't feel like the character that possesses both the ability to horrify and prompt a smile. In other Batman works, such as Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth, the Joker is terrifying, but makes a few cracks that are legitimately funny. To me, what has always been so appealing about the Joker is that, true to character, even he doesn't take himself too seriously, regardless of the impact of his actions. Snyder's Joker felt desperate, sick, near the end of his rope. The New 52 Batman title introduces the Joker assuming the reader is familiar with prior Batman-Joker stories, including references from The Killing Joke, to a not-so-subtle Dark Knight. This is fine, but I feel as if Death of the Family was written as a big pay-off in the Joker-Batman battle in a series that showed the Joker one time, in the first issue, as a clever disguise. If the reader had only read the previous Batman New 52 titles, the Joker would only seem to be another disgusting criminal, that apparently Batman has a long history with, but we've pretty much never seen before now.In the end, this book is worth money, prices seem to be lower than ever and it really is a great read. A lot of this review has been my opinion (it is a review), but more so one that seems to be a little against that of the majority. I set my expectations a little to high and was picturing too much of Mark Hamill's Joker. The ending is satisfying, with a pleasant cliff-hanger that does not feel like a ploy to induce future sales. If read with appropriate expectations and an appreciation for a different Joker, Death of the Family can certainly be placed as a highlight of Batman stories in recent years.
The book is awesome, the mask is creepy as hell. My child will have nightmares for the rest of his life. It wasn't a present for my child, I just jumped out from under his bed with it on. Didn't know boys could scream that high pitched. Suffered a bit of tinnitus from it, but I guess it's deserved.
This is one of the best Batman stories, for sure a must-have on the shelf. I would recommend it for almost anyone, even people who haven't picked up many comics before. If you don't know ANYTHING Batman, you might need to go on wikipedia for a little crash course on Batman chronology as this story takes place far along in the batman career - It isn't even Bruce Wayne under the cowl, it's his ward Dick Grayson. If that's already too intimidating, maybe read a couple starter trades before this, but make sure to come back here and give this book a read! (I'd say you should know generally who Oracle, Jim Gordon, Dick, and Red Robin are before reading, but it's honestly not too important, because the plot is very good anyway.)The story is suspenseful and smartly crafted. Scott Snyder paints a good picture of Dick Grayson and I appreciate that because he is one of my favorite characters. He operates and thinks slightly differently than Bruce would, and it's subtle but it works well. The artist also captures this distinction. And man, whoever colored this trade sure knew their color theory! The art is extremely compelling and some pages left me staring at them just to admire the artwork. All in all super happy with this purchase.
Takes place during the Batman Reborn era in which Dick Grayson had taken over for Bruce after the latter's seeming death during Final Crisis. The Black Mirror sees Dick in the cowl and going up against a group of black market dealers who specialize in selling macabre weapons and trophies of Gotham's worst villains (such as the crowbar used to kill Jason Todd). While Dick fights to put a stop to the black market group, Commissioner Gordon struggles with the return of his mental ill son James Gordon Jr. In one of the best early tales of his Batman career, Scott Snyder weaves an intricate and disturbing tale of psychosis. James Jr. is one of the most creepy Batman villains to date and he proves his menace without superpowers or a flamboyant costume. Using great flashbacks, Snyder builds the story of Commissioner Gordon's slow realization that there is something wrong with his son and the horror he feels that he can't do more to help him. Featuring a terrific ambiguous ending, The Black Mirror is not only one of the best Batman Reborn/Dick Grayson era Batman stories, but one of the best stories of Snyder's early career with the character before his terrific run during the New 52.
I'm a big Dick Grayson fan and a lot of people recommend his run as Batman. The Batman and Robin run is meh (5/10). This was pretty boring as well. The villains kinda stink, I'm not a fan of the art work. I might be biased because I just finished it, but the beginning is a bore, the ending is really good. The Joker and Commissoner Gordons son show up.I'm probably giving it only 3 stars because I got my hopes up. I love Battle for the Cowl and I really wanted to see why Dick Grayson is the heir to the cowl other than being awesome and the first Robin. People told me "this is where he proves himself the better Batman" but the whole story was him messing up but somehow pulling it off. Which I love about him. Makes him more relatable than Batman or any other hero. We all got bad days and some tragic lives but no one actually dwells on it. Dick is a great character and this story does him justice, but I don't see it as him being the "best Batman".3/5 for Art I dislike and a disappointing story.
