"The Rothschild Patent Model Collection lets us see how different our lives would be without the spirit of invention. Seeing what other inventors have done is what motivates us to think outside of the box and to look at life differently. Do we want to watch life go by or be a part of it?" Steve Wozniak Co-Founder of Apple Computer"A national treasury of inspiration for tinkers, model-makers, inventors, hobbyists, innovators, and designers. Both the ingenious mechanisms animating each of these inventions as well as their delightful small-scale model embody a genius that is celebrated by this unique book."Kevin KellyCo-Founder of Wired MagazinePast Editor & Publisher of Whole Earth ReviewEditor & Publisher of Cool Tools Website "The Rothschild Patent Model Collection reminds us that our nation's economic growth is tied to our ability to turn promising ideas into job-supporting innovations. This book illustrates how ideas hatched going back as far as 200 years ago become innovations that were often protected by patents that helped advance our economy. Our culture's embrace of ingenuity and creativity encourages the inventors of our country to continue pursuing their ideas, and those patents are absolutely the center of our global leadership in business."Chris CoonsUnited States Senator, (D-Delaware)"Inventing a Better Mousetrap is an artfully humanized collection of great inventors and their beautiful creations that elegantly achieves that goal. If we want the next 200 years of American growth and innovation to be as exciting as the last two centuries, this book should be required reading."Dean KamenPresident of DEKA Research and Development Corp. Founder of FIRST: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductee"Alan and Ann have preserved the physical history of the first two centuries of Yankee ingenuity, and for this, as a nation, may we be truly grateful. Now, they have brought all of these wonderful models to us in their book, so how 'bout it, Americans--let's put down those electronic tablets and start THINKING again." From the Author

This book is dedicated to the four hundred men and women inventors whose patent models are featured throughout this book. Some of the inventors became famous, such as B.F. Goodrich, Christian Steinway, Nelson Goodyear, and Linus Yale, Jr., known for patenting life-changing inventions. But for most of the inventors chronicled here, their hopes and dreams of becoming rich and famous, or creating some revolutionary new technology, never materialized. Their inventions remained in obscurity, until now. These inventors are finally being recognized for their ingenuity, their imagination, and their efforts in obtaining a United States Patent. May their memories live and be remembered into perpetuity. We would also like to dedicate this book to our good friend, Dr. Forrest Bird (June 9, 1921-August 2, 2015). Dr. Bird's respiratory inventions have been responsible for saving hundreds of thousands of lives throughout the world. Not only was he a major inspiration to us, but his impact on our world will continue to be felt. Forrest Bird was a brilliant yet humble man who was one of the world's greatest inventors. We will miss him very much.

I'm a life long tinkerer and a self educated engineer. I have a natural draw to these types of publications. I love history and I especially love the history of inventions. This book is a walk through a collection of the most creative minds and their collective efforts to improve the lives of everyone. There is literally something of interest to everyone in this book. For a parent or a relative of a budding future inventor/tinkerer/engineer, this book is the fuse that lights the fire of entrepreneurial/inventive spirit. I wish I had this book as part of my early education, eg., in a science or history class, to spark my interest in learning and school in general. It should be part of any school curriculum even at the post secondary level. My warmest congratulations to husband and wife author team (Alan and Anne) for making the effort to keep this record of human ingenuity alive for the rest of us. Highly recommended for the budding entrepreneur and inquisitive inventor types alike.

A wonderful tour through the history of American ingenuity in our early years as a Republic. Bravo.

Interesting, but was expecting more 3D models.

Photographically, and with short descriptive text, this book documents existing patent models from the late 1800s. The book obviously resulted from a labor of love. The text, photographs, and layout are all excellent. The printing is excellent, on heavy weight paper. It's not surprising that this book was published by Make, the premier goto source for do-it-yourself technologies. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of the short quiz at the end, and the 6 do-it-yourself patent model projects that will strike a familiar chord to anyone who reads Make Magazine. So why not 5 star? The book is just at the size limit for soft cover. It's just a little too big and too heavy to comfortably hold while reading. With regard to content, the authors were limited by patent models that still exist and to which they could get access. I suspect they included almost everything that they could photograph, but being inclusive means that some of the inclusions are not very interesting. There were a few, such as the cryptography patent on page 174, that I would have loved to learn more about, but other readers probably will have their own top picks, so egalitarianism though universally applied brevity probably was appropriate.

The book is tons of fun. First, there is a short timeline on patents in USA. Did you know that for a long period of time anyone could receive a patent just for paying a fee with no examination of any kind? After that, for many years, to apply for a patent, the applicant was supposed to turn in a model of the invention. As you can imagine, there were thousands upon thousands of the models collected over the years, but only some survived. The book is about one large collection of the models. It lists many many models, with short explanation on what they do, and articles about the inventors. It is fun to look at objects and try to guess what they might be for. They even included a little quiz at the end to add to the fun. There are instructions for making 6 of the models, but they do look complicated, and most of them require expensive tools. The instructions are step by step with multiple photos and drawings.

As the director of a public library, I look at hundreds, if not thousands of books every year. I found the content and production qualities of "Inventing a Better Mousetrap" to be top notch. The text is well written and the photographs of the patent models are very professional. The book’s layout invites browsing rather than reading it from beginning to end. As a matter of fact, I personally gifted copies of the book to my family at Christmas. Every person immediately started thumbing through the pages and shared a wonderful tidbit they had just learned. They were engaged right away. The inventors’ biographies give insight to the person as well as the invention. A fun addition is the “What’s that Model?” quiz that invites the reader to guess the purpose of the invention using a photograph of the patent model. For the more talented reader, detailed instructions on how to actually build six patent models are included. I highly recommend "Inventing a Better Mousetrap" for those curious about American history and engineering.

I continually enjoy to read through this book "Inventing a Better Mousetrap: 200 years of American History in the Amazing World of Patent Models". It is currently sitting on the table and continues to be read by my family who like to invents things. The historical timeline begins from the early 1790 to 2014 and is filled with photographs of inventions, brief descriptions, and their patent numbers.Overall, this a great reference book for people who are interested in history and inventions. This book includes patent models, working models required for US patent filings. I was pleased to read that the Rothschilds' personal collection has become a permanent addition to Hagley Museum and Library in Delaware.

Leave it to Make to breathe interest and life into something as dryly written as patents. This is a coffee table book that me and my fellow geek guests have enjoyed thumbing through. Sections are divided into logical sections, containing short, lay-person explanations on important patents. It's fun to read and contains a wealth of knowledge!I know this mentions it has sections to build stuff, but that's not really its primary purpose. That said, the "maker" will appreciate this greatly as it provides insight into things that shape our world today as well as insight you can take into your Make projects!
