Good Shepherd: A Thousand-Year Journey from Psalm 23 to the New Testament

Review

"Kenneth Bailey refreshes the souls of readers with deep textual insights and helpful contextual background to safely shepherd readers through the thousand-year story of Psalm 23. He makes several stops along the way in the Prophets, before settling into the Gospels where he deftly introduces us to a fresh understanding of the Good Shepherd. Anyone who loves the 23rd Psalm will love this book."--David Lamb, associate professor of Old Testament, Biblical Theological Seminary; author of God Behaving Badly"Bailey presents a cumulative comparison of these passages as he progresses, drawing insights from books and articles written by Middle Eastern shepherds and from commentaries and Bible translations in Arabic, Syriac, and Armenian. The Good Shepherd is appropriate for pastors, seminary students, and other serious students of the Bible."--Daniel Johnson, CBA Retailers + Resources, January 2015"Psalm 23 and its theme of the Good Shepherd have long captivated the minds of Christian authors. In this book Bailey demonstrates that there is a close connection between the theme of God's Shepherd as depicted in Psalm 23 and other texts in the Bible. Bailey's approach is accessible, avoiding technical and overly specialized language. The fact that Bailey draws attention to the Arabic heritage of Christian literature on this topic is most welcome. The volume will prove to be stimulating devotional reading and a useful tool for preaching."--Silviu Tatu, Themelios, Vol. 40, Issue 2, August 2015"Bailey has written up a whole range of fascinating studies for wider consumption, and now in this series we have this fine book on the imagery of the 'good shepherd.' . . . The result is a clear example of thoughtful study of a theme through the whole canon. It will benefit those interested in the nature of Christian leadership, in the relevance of the much-loved but perhaps over-familiar Psalm 23, and those keen to reflect on Jesus' ministry in wider biblical terms. As always, it is written with a gentle firmness, and a strong sense of the pressing relevance of biblical texts for pastoral ministry. I hope it will be widely read."--Dr. Richard Briggs, Psephizo, February 26, 2015"Among the most beloved of all Scripture is the 23rd Psalm. Countless books, studies and sermons have been based on this text. Yet Kenneth Bailey offers a new perspective through which to view this cherished psalm. Using Psalm 23 as a foundation and guide, Bailey shows how Old and New Testament texts develop the Good Shepherd motif. Further, he explains what this motif teaches about God, about Jesus, and about our being part of the flock."--G. B. Howell Jr., Biblical Illustrator, Winter 2015-2016"This book will work for a variety of audiences, from undergraduate students to professional scholars. Its clear organization and lucid prose make it readable all through, and its repetition (in the good sense) also makes it usable as a reference book."--Carl Bridges, Stone-Campbell Journal, Fall 2015"The balance of literary analysis and sociohistorical insight provides readers with new eyes to see; what was familiar becomes novel. This is a valuable addition to seminary and personal libraries alike."--Brittany Hale, Religious Studies Review, 41:4, December, 2015"Deftly wielding the tools of biblical scholarship, story-telling and cultural exegesis, Ken Bailey has restored to its full color and brilliance one of the most magnificent images of Scripture--the character and work of the Good Shepherd. This book is a treasure trove of useable insights for preachers and teachers and a devotional classic for daily disciples alike."--Daniel Meyer, Christ Church, Oakbrook, Illinois"'You prepare a table before me . . . my cup overflows.' What a feast Ken Bailey has prepared for us in this book, and what an overflowing cupful of insights and illumination. If you ever thought there was nothing more you could ever learn or preach about the biblical image of the good shepherd, this book has an abundance of surprises. Again and again I thought, 'Why have I never seen that before?'--as Ken draws on his rich lifetime's experience of Middle Eastern culture to explore biblical texts, and particularly when he shows eye-opening connections between Old and New Testament texts around the shepherd theme. This is a book that simultaneously brings the Bible to life, and exalts the Lord Jesus Christ by deeply enriching our understanding of his mission and claims as the Good Shepherd."--Christopher J. H. Wright, International Ministries Director, Langham Partnership"Ken Bailey is the consummate expert on the cultural context of first-century life. And here he applies these skills to one motif--the shepherd--illustrating how it is employed in a variety of biblical stories and parables. His interpretations use a variety of tools unknown to many of us: ancient versions, original languages, cultural anthropology, ancient Middle Eastern writers who shared this ancient culture, and his own personal career embedded in a crosscultural life in the Middle East. Always insightful, always fresh, consistently surprising, Bailey has produced yet another book that will get many of us rethinking beloved passages of Scripture in completely new ways."--Gary Burge, Wheaton College

Chapter 6 of this book was one of those moments for me where one's life is challenged in a flash😫 Jesus never spoke one word against the wicked leaders of his day, from Caesar to the Sanhedrin, even when dragged before them to be killed. When all Israel was expecting him to take action for the licentious execution of his influential prophet of a cousin, John the Baptist (the military language in Mark's telling of the 5000 men formed up in centuries runs deeper than Bailey observes), Jesus instead responds by spiritual coup, through incarnating the promise in Ezekiel 34 and Psalm 23 for God to attend to his lost sheep himself. It is very difficult for me to hold my tongue and change course. Now when I am tempted to criticize anything more than the corruption of the "Pharisees," I will try to remember that Jesus told me to instead replace the bad shepherds by distributing his miraculous bread and fish.

I would give this book 4-1/2 stars, but had to choose between "4" or "5", so I'm rounding upward. I stumbled across Kenneth Bailey's work via a verbal reference in a recent Ray Vander Laan series and was intrigued by the concepts Ray presented and credited to Dr. Bailey. So, as a follow-up, I researched Kenneth Bailey and his background and published works, and chose "The Good Shepherd" as a starting point to both become acquainted with his insight and to serve as a backdrop from which to develop a series of lessons for the adult Sunday School class that I teach. I was not disappointed. Dr. Bailey paints a beautiful, scripturally based, evolving picture of "The Good Shepherd" as it's developed against the canvas of both Old and New Testament texts. My only reservation from an unequivocal 5-star overall is that in his last referenced portion of the picture - based upon I Peter 5:1-4 - he seems to stretch the connections perhaps a bit further than they might naturally solidly support. This is not to say his interpretation is incorrect, and, in fact, he may be spot on, but this one chapter seemed a bit tenuous. The rest of the texts, along with Dr. Bailey's exposition, reveal a level of depth and understanding acquired through years of spiritual ministry and pilgrimage. Sadly (for us), the earthly portion of that pilgrimage ended just over a week ago. But from Dr. Bailey's perspective, it's undoubtedly a joyous occasion as his Good Shepherd came to welcome him home to the eternal fold. This is a brilliantly insightful book and well worth the investment of time spent reading it!

As Bailey's FINDING THE LOST transformed and super-charged the way I understood the parable of the merciful father, aka waiting father aka prodigal son, this study transformed and matured my understanding of the parable of the good shepherd. His presentation is thurough, but consistently readable and compelling. He demonstrates that the good shepherd is not a recurring motif through the Bible, but a thread, nay, a steel cable. I teach and preach in a culture that is fond of the parable of the prodigal son for illustrating sin and God's response to it. In my particular niche of that ministry, which focuses on "tween-agers", I now see that the good shepherd offers a more relevsnt demonstration of God's love for them, and probably many others besides. This year alone I have bought about a dozen copies for those responsible for communicating the gospel at our camp.

This is a good book if you enjoy language, literary analysis, and Biblical history. Bailey and others follow ten themes of the Good Shepard psalm through books of both the Hebrew and Christian Testaments. They follow the themes to analyze the structure of the stories, word choices, historical settings, and culture accordingly. A drawback: Bailey is very thorough, and some readers might find that redundant. Overall - a good book if you do enjoy the items mentioned above. Final Note: I read Kindle and a friend had the hard copy. The summary charts Bailey presents seemed more complete in the hard copy, and I'm still very satisfied with the Kindle version.

Wonderful study of this Psalm and corresponding scripture about the shepherd theme.Includes scripture in the New Testament that pertains to this psalm!I used this as a resource when teaching about Psalm 23 and the in-depth information was helpful!

This the second time I have used this study in a church. It is a very meaningful approach to the Psalms. I would use it again. The focus on the Psalms as a prayer practice toucjes the soul of participants in new ways. One participant told me she is still using the psalms for prayer a year later and finds it helpful.

I've read Bailey's other works with great benefit, and was pleased tosee this new study. I ordered a copy for myself and one to send to afriend as a Christmas gift. We are both delighted with the book--athorough and well-documented study of the image of Jesus as TheGood Shepherd. I highly recommend this latest book from Ken Bailey.--Penman

I am sorry to say I was disappointed by this book. I have really appreciated Dr Bailey's writing about Luke 15 and thought this would be a perfect fit. While he had lots of good observations, I thought from the start that he overreached on the thesis. Bailey sees one Good Shepherd tradition beginning with Psalm 23 that the other authors of Scripture consciously pick up on. Dr Timothy Laniak's book, Shepherds After My Own Heart, is better here, talking about images and themes of sheep and shepherds in the Scripture without making too much of them.
